Wow. That sounds like a common problem to have with any short abbreviation tbh

> Among Indians, "dp" is used almost exclusively, the other meanings of "dp" are not commonly known, and "pfp" is rare - but it's quite possible I'm just not among the right crowd. I can second that; especially with collegegoers in Bangalore and Chennai I've never heard anything other than DP. I didn't realise it was a region-specific thing, but if nigel hasn't come across it at all then it looks like it is ↺

Now that I think about it, I seldom worry about what the app calls it; I just go to the group or user settings in the app and tap the picture to change it

And if I'm talking to other people I'll use whatever term I want—DP/picture/image/icon depending on whom I'm talking to and what my mood is—without worrying about app terminology, so maybe it's not as big a deal?

In which case I'd say steer clear of nicknames like dp or pfp at all and use some unabbreviated term (I think that brings us to: avatar, group/profile picture, group/profile image?)

I concur. "Profile Image", for example. I personally think that works for group chats as well; it is the room/channel profile you're viewing I guess?✎ -

But yes, the interface should be intuitive enough that the name doesn't matter.

https://activitypods.org/key-learnings-from-building-social-apps Interesting review on the challenges of building an ActivityPod network. ActivityPod is Solid hosting + Activitypub network, built to be a foundation for social apps in general. The video gives some pointers to what needs to be done to further social apps when the technical foundation exists and I think the XMPP ecosystem could use that. The first half of the presentation is stuff that ActivityPod still struggles with but XMPP has solved, so I still believe XMPP is a better foundation for anything social

In particular I think a few tutorials on "how to make a social app" based on frameworks (for exemple libervia) would be useful to demonstrate that
