How about just "picture"?

As in, "set a picture for this group" which is I think how I end up saying it informally anyway

The modern lingo is "DP" (comes for "Display Picture" but is a word in its own right now). But I'm not sure if that applies to groups as well or only to people. I can ask around and let you know

I don't think any app actually says "DP" though; it's just become an informal generic term people use

I hear "pfp" a lot

Yup historically where I used to see "avatar", I now see "pfp" used. Never seen dp and think that's a bad choice personally due to being associated with other activities. Don't want one if these mistakes https://www.ebaumsworld.com/articles/not-everybody-is-a-dp-girly-clueless-influencer-discovers-that-dp-doesnt-just-stand-for-dr-pepper/87467042/

Among Indians, "dp" is used almost exclusively, the other meanings of "dp" are not commonly known, and "pfp" is rare - but it's quite possible I'm just not among the right crowd.✎ -
