> I think presence is increasingly less useful... I tend to agree, to a degree. I really like that you can use DND while the phone is muted / when inside an appointment
-
Zash
I think presence is of more value for work team chat than personal chat.
-
Zash
MS Teams still has presence displayed somewhat prominently.
-
Ge0rG
The one thing I hate about Teams is that you can't see the presence of the whole team, at a glance
-
Zash
The chat at $work[-1] I worked on didn't have any presence but we went and added it. Team members, managers etc wanna know who's awake or in a meeting and such. :)

So I end up starting a new conversation with all the people from whom I need one.

I think presence is a useful feature - when people wouldn’t ignore it all the time… *sigh*
-
Zash
You could check if someone only has a mobile client available, and mark that as some special "online via their phone" status
-
ij
Cisco Jabber has an indicator for mobile phones

Gajim, too
-
Link Mauve
Movim too.

Zash, not sure. Whenever I'm on gajim or converseJS I often just start a chat with someone that just came online with whom I didnt talk in a while. just to say hi. otherwise i just talk to people i have 'buisiness' to tlak to.
-
ij
basically I also like the feature of getting notified when someone is available again… it’s sometimes very useful
-
lovetox
yeah but mostly at work
-
lovetox
its a feature that is a must have at work
-
lovetox
complete opposite of private communication
-
muppeth
lovetox, i think equally useful in both cases
-
muppeth
the most funny thing could be you could sell it as a super feature non of the competitorrs have.
-
lovetox
its only useful if you know the other contact actually sets it according to his state
-
muppeth
i am quite certain that people would find it useful to see of the person is online or not
-
lovetox
this is done automatically in work envs
-
lovetox
muppeth, why?
-
lovetox
why do i care if someone is "online"
-
lovetox
he has a smartphone, i just text him
-
muppeth
why not
-
muppeth
to see if he is active
-
lovetox
what difference does it make if he is in this second "online"
-
muppeth
so the online could be set to when someone has a phone open, busy/afk when phone in the pocket.
-
lovetox
still not sure why i would care, if i want to text someone i text him
-
lovetox
why would i care if he is busy or not
-
muppeth
like I said. i do find myself typing more often to users i dont chat with often when using gajim or converse because i just see that they poped up online
-
lovetox
that makes my question not go away, or whatever i want to say
-
lovetox
ok yeah i never do that
-
lovetox
i only text someone if i have information to give or ask
-
muppeth
i would never chit chat wiht someone at randm on conversations or dino because of lack of presence or presence being dag deep in the interface
-
lovetox
not searching for someone to talk because im bored
-
muppeth
thats the point
-
muppeth
you dont search for people to chat. i know in phone scenario getting popup info about user going online would be overkill, but if you would have a roster with clearly marked presence and have by default sort by online it would be quite useful. of cource then the whole roster comes into play which seems like everyone wants to kick out because others dont do it, but i find it very useful also.
-
lovetox
yeah, i didnt want to argue that its should not be displayed
-
lovetox
most of the time you can make it with a small icon or something, it does not really get in the way
-
lovetox
so i dont see a reason to actively hide it
