I am wondering how MAM works on most servers today. I was experiencing that some accounts were not archiving messages default. Do I need to verify the archiving prefs (XEP-0441) on every login?

Alex, I think most servers do it by default. However some clients (used to?) disable it, such as Siskin

I don't have a good answer other than checking every login, if you care. I'm working to deprecate that protocol anyway, and eventually remove it from Prosody.

Thanks Matt, I need to make more tests. For now it looks to me like the specific ejabberd install I was working with had the prefs default to never. Will I will make more tests with new accounts
