it requires users to produce some somewhat-meaningful string each time they want to have a thread

while "in-reply-to:" semantics allows generated id's and works without much user input

I like XMPP and since this is the "modernize" forum I wanted to give you guys my feedback

So, encoding semantics in the plain text is generally not a good idea, but if users want to type things in special ways they're all free to say whatever they want.

That is a natural consequence of open protocols after enough time when projects are started at different times, with different priorities and different resources.
