Modern XMPP project discussion - 2022-07-30

Hello. :-) This is a short update on my Project "XMPP Server for our Company": We did have success with the implementation but were unsatisfied with the positive impact on peoples work. So we are trying Matrix now and it's looking much more promising.

  2. jonas’

so the XMPP project was too good and now you're trying to sabotage productivity using matrix? :D

  3. MSavoritias (fae,ve)

Seems like trolls cant even get their stories correctly XD

  4. chris

The problem with XMPP is, everything but basic text messaging is a mess on the client side of things and the quality and availability of clients on different plattforms is poor.

  5. chris

It's not trolling ... it's about lessons learned, to help making XMPP mor successful.

  6. MSavoritias (fae,ve)

Sounds like you cant do proper research on clients to me and just want a sass spftware

  7. jonas’

chris, sorry, I think there was a typo in your original sentence and I tried to make a joke based on that

  8. jonas’

    thanks for the update

Back to the story: Text Chat is not enough to increase productivity. It can even hurt productivity, if people discuss things via chat, when talking on phone would be faster. Therefore seemless switching from Chat to Voice and Video is very important.

  10. chris

Another important thing, is to get everyone aboard. That means iPhone, iPad and Mac Users and even people with Amazon Fire tablets.

  11. chris

Last but not least, the people most central to communication within the company do mostly work on Windows and Voice and Video Calls on Windows is very important for overall productivity over all.

  12. chris

I love XMPP and on Android (Conversations/Snikket) and Linux (Gajim) it's a real joy to use. But for mass adoption and businesses adoption the client situation is too bad. Matrix has one fully featured client for all client devices. That's a massive benefit.

  13. qy

    🙄

  14. chris

I'll continue to work with both, but for our company it will be Matrix. Because we need to have a successful federated Open Source solution. Otherwise it is "Everyone just uses WhatsApp", Microsoft Teams, Slack or any other horror.

  15. MSavoritias (fae,ve)

You could have just said xmpp is not a saas and matrix is. 🤷

  16. MattJ

chris, I would have probably told you to use Matrix from the start for this use-case :)

  17. MattJ

XMPP doesn't have a good enough solution for team chat right now

  18. MattJ

For personal messaging, there's Snikket, but it's explicitly not trying to serve business/team use-cases

  19. MattJ

and s/Matrix/Element/ in my original message

  20. MattJ

Matrix also has a bunch of clients that have differing feature sets, and compatibility issues

  21. MattJ

But most people don't care, because Element exists

  22. chris

The team chat aspect is not so important and XMPP is good enough for that. Seamless switching from chat to voice to video is a more important difference. Having the same client on all platforms and with all features is also a very important difference.

  24. Zash

    But is it actionable?

  25. emus

    Zash: I believe so
