    my opinion is that presence could just as well be entirely left out, especially so considering that it amounts to so much overhead in message bandwidth

    I actually liked prosodys mod_throttle_presence. I didn't noticed problems with it.. So it seems one can have presence and lower the bandwidth considerable.
