Re: threaded discussions, if messages fastening/citing was a thing in practice, it'd be essentially a DAG, and giving a shared name to "the lineage of co-referenced messages" could be good for filtering/muting purposes, but I don't see that working well on an heterogeneous clients base where "threads" would break all the time due to clients not supporting it/properly.
