Hello to all. I just joined the room after a recommendation from over at the Snikket group. Even if I'm new to this group and the community as a whole, I think I bring a good answer for the last question asked by cagent.

Signal or XMPP? - Both! - Signal is perfect, for communication with your personal contacts, people you exchange phone numbers with. - XMPP is good for everything else. - Communicating with Groups of stagers. - Communicating with business contacts and colleagues from your privately owned smartphone but via a businesses account. - Communicating with people who don't have a phone number, which could be your children (age 9 - 12).

I am a Signal user and love it. I got into XMPP, cause I was looking for a messenger for work. One I could use wit my phone, one I can go offline with after work, one that doesn't require me to share my private phone number, one that allows my employers company to supply all employees with without having to pay extra for each account.

well, the last point depends on your specific solution, right? ;) If you’ve chosen a hosted solution you might end up with per-person fees, because of a underlying business model. But that’s nit-picking… ;)

I wouldn’t say Signal is perfect, nor is XMPP for sure. At least Signal seems to be quite userfriendly… or endusers being used to handle such a software like Signal. But there are some drawbacks (you mentioned yourself some) that puts Signal away from being perfect in my eyes. YMMV, of course :)
