Out of curiosity, what do other languages use for "TV channels"?
-
Zash
"TV-kanal"
-
MattJ
Serious?
-
Zash
Yes, that's in swedish.
-
Ge0rG
TV-Kanal in German. Subtle difference there is
-
MattJ
So I don't get why Kanal would be so ridiculous for a chat channel
-
pep.
« Chaine de télévision », even though I've heard « canal »
-
pep.
(or Chaine Télévision / Chaine TV)
-
MattJ
That's an interesting one :)
-
Zash
Google translate says it's the same in norwegian? Lies!

The usual critizism is that TV 'channel'/'Kanal' is more PubSub than groupchat (one speaker, the rest subscribed read-only) I think?
-
Ge0rG
in German, "Kanal" also means canal, which is another aspect of the confusion.
-
Holger
(But it's not like I care much.)

Ge0rG
I *do* care much, but I'm also very biased due to a long exposition to IRC and other badly designed chat systems.
-
Holger
Wouldn't IRC bias make you a fan of channels?
-
Holger
Oh IRC channels where bad so we don't do those?

Holger: I've been a proponent of using the same term for channels and how-are-private-groups-called-again for a long time?
-
pep.
Ge0rG, in french "canal" also means canal.
-
Holger
Ge0rG: Private groups are "groups" I think?
-
Holger
Which seems the important thing to me. Channels are for nerds and they can cope either way.
-
Holger
If they'd ever become popular among non-geeks the name would have to be "Facebook Groups".
-
Ge0rG
I think that "chatrooms" are less nerdy than canals.
-
DebXWoody
Channel has another meaning as "Chat Channel". I also think, that Channel is the wrong Term. It's more the psychical concept of sender and receiver.
-
Ge0rG
it's only a channel if you have a broadcast license.

I'd rather have assumed something like: Kotierer->Output->Kanal.

Canal both in Catalan and Spanish, also "Cadena" in Spanish is used by elder people, the term is original from radio stations. No one younger than 60 would say "cadena" anymore I think
