is anyone here in a larger private group (+100 users) with omemo enabled? is such a group significantly more demanding on the server? and is key exchange fairly smooth when a new person joins?

Not on the server, but omemo doesn't scale well to large groups due to key exchange.

There is some ongoing works to support MLS in xmpp that will solve this.

But e2ee in such large groups is of very little practical benefit.

okay, but can you estimate at what point scaling will be acceptable? and what if at some point it just can’t handle it?

There is no strict limit. The main isdue is when people add new devices.

If that group is fairly stable in regards to connecting devices then it can work.
