mathieui: this whole "view-once media" stuff looks like a pile of dirty hacks duct-taped together, IMHO

Also, it's impossible to prevent clients from saving the file, which makes the whole thing useless

This has been discussed so many times 🤷 Some people want it, others think its a bad idea, and seemingly no amount of arguing will let us find an agreement.

It's the XSF's job to provide specifications so that if two people want to implement the same thing, they can do it in an interoperable way. I think as long as two projects are interested in this, it should exist as a XEP even if it is "imperfect" at a high level (it also means the imperfections can be documented)

I think this is fine as long as it is made explicit that it is a controversial topic and might not see "universal" adoption and usage

Personally, I think there are enough situations where the feature is useful without your contact being an adversary. As long as apps don't mislead people to believe it can be relied on 100% it's fine.

(i.e. won't ever make it to compliance suites and the like)

Maybe there could be a workstream/sub-organization whose role it would be to certify that some client/server implementation, at some specific revisions, is effectively compliant. That would quickly become DRMesque :)
