Modern XMPP project discussion - 2024-04-08

  1. MattJ

Worth bringing up here: there is a draft PR to move the modernxmpp.org docs to xmpp.org: https://github.com/xsf/xmpp.org/pull/1363

  2. jonas’

    :-o

  3. MattJ

It was discussed at the summit, and I think most people there were in favour

  4. jonas’

    cool!

  5. MattJ

I'm on the fence about it - I think it will be a good improvement for xmpp.org (the dev docs currently there are poor and out of date), but possibly bad for the "modern XMPP" movement as a whole.

  6. MattJ

Having a separate project with a separate identity brought more attention to the docs. I think a fear I have is that they will get merged into xmpp.org and then in 5-10 years they will be the new "tech pages" (forgotten and out of date)

  7. MattJ

I don't think the XSF currently has a good workflow for (non-XEP) documentation maintenance

  8. jonas’

    correct

  9. MattJ

But maybe it will be fine and I'm just over-thinking things

  10. jonas’

keeping an eye out for that seems sensible.

  11. jonas’

redirecting (on the HTTP level) pages which have been merged to xmpp.org and using the modernxmpp.org space for more innovation seems like the best course of action in that light.

MattJ, jonas’: but why you think this cannot be a good collarboration? or should just be driven there. because people disagree? was that a problem in the past with modern xmpp?

    > Having a separate project with a separate identity brought more attention to the docs. I think a fear I have is that they will get merged into xmpp.org and then in 5-10 years they will be the new "tech pages" (forgotten and out of date) Isn't a think of communication?

  15. MattJ

emus: why was xmpp.org neglected in all the years before and while modernxmpp.org existed?

  16. MattJ

And when I say "xmpp.org" I mean of course the developer documentation on the website

  17. emus

    > emus: why was xmpp.org neglected in all the years before and while modernxmpp.org existed? nobody wanted to deal with the website setup
