  1. MattJ

    marc.laporte: how is it?

  2. MattJ

    And what client? :)

  3. MattJ

I have a soft spot for the form factor - I actually learnt to code on a Psion Series 3

  4. Ge0rG

All the current keyboard phones are a bit too expensive for something I'm not 100% confident I'll like

  5. Ge0rG

But I'm really sad after I had to leave behind my HTC Desire Z because it was just too slow for recent Android

  6. Ge0rG

And I'm still missing my 9500 a little bit, despite its broken hinges, and limitation to GPRS and 802.11b

  7. Zash

I sometimes boot up my N900 and play Robot finds kitten

  8. Ge0rG

I was a long time PuTTY / ConnectBot user of screen + irssi + poezio, and it was acceptable on qwerty phones and unbearable on regular Androids. However, with yaxim and a swipe keyboard I'm perfectly fine for most of my chatting needs now, and only become frustrated when I need to do mobile SSH for server administration reasons

  9. Ge0rG

And with the Cosmo being built around a MediaTek CPU you know it will never receive an upgrade to the next major Android version.

  10. Ge0rG

But maybe it's good enough as a mini Linux toy

  11. MattJ

It's very expensive for a toy

  12. Zash

    Is it?

  13. MattJ

I guess I'm talking as someone who has never bought a phone (for myself)

  14. Zash

(I apparently can't see without JavaScript)

  15. pep.

    hones are expensive :(

  16. pep.

    (smart)phones at least

  17. Zash

They're in the same price range as some laptops afaik.

  18. MattJ

I guess if my phone died (and it's not too healthy already), I could consider it, given that it doubles as a phone and I use my phone as a phone 0.1% of the time

  19. MattJ

and the other 99.9% of the time I complain about capacitive touchscreens and software keyboards

  20. Zash

MattJ: I guess you don't know anyone who bought a yacht either?

  21. Zash

Who says toys need to be cheap?

  22. Ge0rG

MattJ: modern touch screens are pretty good, you can get a very decent phone in the 200€ range, at least in the EU

  23. Zash

    Sometimes I miss my 3310

  24. MattJ

Ge0rG, modern touch screens work in the rain?

  25. MattJ

See, I don't live in California

  26. Ge0rG

That's a good point. I'm not often using my phone out in the rain

  27. MattJ

When I am, I usually *really* want it to work

  28. MattJ

Instead it ignores my touches, or starts ghost-tapping on random things

  29. Ge0rG

Yeah, right. There's no means to that, except moving to California

  30. marc.laporte

    MattJ: Conversations on Android 9

  31. marc.laporte

Ge0rG: why will Cosmo not get an upgrade because of MediaTek?

  32. Ge0rG

marc.laporte: MediaTek is notoriously bad with kernel and driver support. They publish their SoC together with the public android du jour and go on designing the next SoC, completely forgetting the old one

  33. Ge0rG

And you can't simply forward port their driver mess, unless you have a large and dedicated team of android driver specialists

  34. marc.laporte

https://store.planetcom.co.uk/products/gemini-pda-1 is MediaTek and supports upgradefrom 7 to 8

  35. marc.laporte

I suspect street price of Gemini will go

  36. marc.laporte

I suspect street price of Gemini will go down as some upgrade to the Cosmo

  37. marc.laporte

    From what I read

  38. marc.laporte

Cosmo is supposed to be more usable as a phone, compared to the Gemini

  39. marc.laporte

I got used to the tiny BlackBerry Priv keyboard so the Cosmom

  40. marc.laporte

I got used to the tiny BlackBerry Priv keyboard so the Cosmo's keyboard is huge in comparison
